Sometimes a room doesn’t need new furniture. It just needs a new layer.
Custom pillows are one of our favorite ways to refresh a space without replacing the pieces you already own. A sofa may still be beautiful and perfectly comfortable, but changing the fabrics, colors, patterns, and textures around it can make the entire room feel new again.
And while pillows may seem like a small detail, we believe they’re one of the places where you can have the most fun with design.
Why Custom Pillows Make Such a Difference
For us, a custom pillow always begins with the textile.
We have access to beautiful designer fabrics in everything from printed linens and velvets to embroideries, wovens, florals, checks, stripes, geometrics, and more. A pillow gives us the opportunity to use a fabric that might be too bold—or too expensive—to use throughout an entire room.
That one incredible floral, animal print, or embroidered fabric can become the piece that brings the whole room together.
We also love mixing patterns rather than making every pillow match. A larger-scale floral might sit alongside a small check, stripe, velvet, or textured solid. It’s that mix of pattern, scale, color, and texture that gives a room a collected, layered look.
The Details Make It Custom
The fabric is only the beginning.
One of our favorite parts of designing a pillow is choosing how it will be finished. A simple pillow can become something completely different with the addition of a contrast cord, flange, fringe, tassel, banding, or decorative tape.
A contrast welt can pull out a secondary color from a patterned fabric. A flange can give a pillow a softer, more tailored appearance. Fringe and tassels add texture and personality, while a beautiful tape or banding can turn even a simple solid linen or velvet into something special.
Sometimes the trim is the detail that makes the pillow.
Play With Shape and Scale
Not every pillow needs to be a 20-inch square.
We love incorporating different shapes and sizes—oversized squares, smaller accent pillows, long lumbars, bolsters, and even unexpected shapes. Varying the scale keeps a sofa or bed from feeling too predictable.
The same is true for pattern. Instead of using several patterns of the same size, we might pair a large-scale print with a smaller geometric or stripe and then add a solid velvet or linen for a place for the eye to rest.
It’s less about matching and more about creating a combination that feels intentional.
Making Custom Pillows More Affordable
Designer fabrics can be an investment, but there are smart ways to use them.
One of our favorites is to use the designer fabric on the front of the pillow only and choose a coordinating solid or less expensive fabric for the back. You still get the full impact of that beautiful textile without paying to use it where you rarely see it.
We can also use a special fabric in smaller ways—as a flange, band, or accent—or take a simple solid fabric and elevate it with a beautiful designer tape or trim.
Custom doesn’t necessarily mean using the most expensive option everywhere. It’s about knowing where the special details will have the most impact.
Don’t Forget the Insert
The inside matters, too.
A quality pillow insert gives a custom pillow its shape, fullness, and luxurious feel. We consider the finished size of the pillow and select the appropriate insert so it doesn’t look flat or underfilled.
It’s another small detail, but those small details are what separate a truly custom pillow from something mass produced.
You May Not Need a New Sofa After All
Before replacing a sofa or chair simply because your room feels dated, consider changing what’s around it.
A new combination of custom pillows, paired with a beautiful throw, updated accessories, or even new window treatments, can completely change the direction of a room for considerably less than replacing all of the furniture.
